Grand Canyon Railway and Hotel has worked hard to be an industry leader of Sustainability in both Hospitality and Train Operations. Grand Canyon Railway's Fred Harvey Restaurant has been 3 Star Certified Green Restaurant for over 10 years featuring sustainably sourced ingredients, low flow fixtures, variable speed kitchen hoods and LED lighting.

The Grand Canyon Railway Hotel was renovated to include FSC Certified furniture sourced and fabricated in the United States and recently installed electric vehicle charging stations. On the Train Grand Canyon Railway has retrofitted their 100-year-old Steam Locomotive 4960 to run on WVO Waste Vegetable Oil sourced from their own kitchen fryers and other restaurants in Arizona. Petroleum based engine lubricants have been replaced with vegetable-based products and cleaning solvents replaced with environmentally sensitive citrus alternatives. In 2023 Grand Canyon Railway started the exploratory process of considering a Regenerative Electric Locomotive system that would recharge batteries from the Dynamic Braking Systems already used on their Locomotives.
