A national effort to provide jobs to veterans, active duty military members, National Guard and Reserve members and military spouses is coming to Flagstaff and local businesses are urged to get involved.
The Flagstaff Chamber is one of the sponsors for the “Hiring Our Heroes” job fair on Thursday, June 14 from 9 am to Noon at the American Legion Post 3, 204 W. Birch Ave.
The national effort was launched last year by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Working with partners, mostly state and local chambers, the effort resulted in more than 150 hiring fairs in 48 states, resulting in about 10,000 people getting jobs.
This year, Hiring Our Heroes hopes to conduct job fairs in 400 communities across the nation, including Flagstaff.
According to statistics provided by the U.S. Chamber, the unemployment rate for post 9/11 veterans is 12.1%, higher than the national average. That percentage grows to 29% for those veterans currently under 25 years of age and about 26% for military spouses.
Interested businesses can contact the Chamber for more information or register for free at hoh.greatjob.net. Job seekers should also register at the site to guarantee admission. Walk-ins are welcome, but space is not guaranteed until you register.
In addition to the Flagstaff Chamber, the U.S. Chamber and the American Legion, the local job fair is also sponsored by the Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service, the Arizona Committee of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, the Arizona Department of Economic Security, the Employment Partnership of the Armed Forces and NBC News.
