24th Annual Winterfest Flagstaff
The Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce, Pepsi and Arizona Snowbowl celebrate the magic of winter in our wonderful mountain town with the 24th Annual Winterfest Flagstaff. This compilation of cultural, artistic, sporting and other events held in Flagstaff during the month of February is part of the Chamber’s work to create a strong local economy and promote our community.
This year’s Winterfest Flagstaff features the return of the popular Sled Dog Races, which will be held February 6 and 7 at Mormon Lake Lodge. In addition to the two-day race, there will be a weight pull competition on February 27 at Wheeler Park.
Other sporting events in February include NAU men’s and women’s basketball games plus track and field events.
Snowplay is a big part of our winter celebration. In addition to snowplay areas such as Wing Mountain a few miles out of town, Arizona Snowbowl and the Nordic Center are geared up for skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing.
For art lovers, there are several exhibits during the month at the Museum of Northern Arizona and the Coconino Center for the Arts. In addition, the First Friday Art Walk on February 5 is a great evening celebration of the arts. Stroll through numerous boutiques and galleries in Historic Downtown beginning at 6 p.m.
NAU will be holding not one but two film festivals during the month at the Cline Library - every Tuesday evening the university will showcase critically acclaimed films as part of the 2010 Spring Film Series. During the weekend of February 20 & 21, a French film festival will show five unique examples of cinema.
February is full of theater, with showings of both “The Merry Wives of Windsor” and “MacBeth”. Other live performances include a Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra concert, the NAU Jazz Madrigal Festival and the Flagstaff Master Chorale's Sing for the Cure to benefit the American Cancer Society. For you dance fans, Flagstaff will again host a community contra dance.
Dining is another big part of Winterfest. Many Flagstaff restaurants offer Winterfest specials, such as Main Street Caterings “Winter Food Fest” each Saturday in February and Valentine's Day. In addition there are specially themed meals and events, such as the annual Robert Burns Supper on February 6.
This month is a wonderful time to assist many Flagstaff charities. The annual outdoor Snowball Slide for the Assistance League, Big Brother Big Sisters Bowling for Kids and the Denim and Diamonds Gala for the American Cancer Society all will occur during Winterfest Flagstaff.
Whether you are a visitor or a resident, you’ll be able to find activities that will fill up sunny days or cold snowy nights. |
