POLITICAL UPDATE
PROP 100 – A REFLECTION:
After weeks of heated campaigning, the final tally was a difference of just a few hundred people. The Flagstaff Chamber’s NO on 100 Political Action Committee played a significant role in the Prop 100 campaign. The PAC raised a little more than $7,000 from local businesses and individuals and put the bulk of funds raised behind the Chamber’s NO on 100 television advertisement.

Thanks to Rob and Elise Wilson at Aspen Pro Media for producing a great advertisement. Thanks to Devina and family, Abel and Mitch Strohman for contributing their time and talents to the TV spot. Thanks to Al Madel and David Evans for acting as Chairman and Treasurer of the Chamber’s PAC respectively.

The Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce has recently joined the ranks of a growing number of Chambers in Western states who are adding political action as a tool to promote and defend the interests of local businesses. In addition, the Chamber continues to focus on providing networking opportunities for all business members, representing the interests of business before government, promoting our community and creating a strong local economy.

LEGISLATIVE SESSION 2005
A BRIEF WRAP-UP:

The legislative session ended recently with the Governor and State Legislature agreeing on a balanced budget for the state of roughly $8.2 billion.
The ending, however, was highlighted by the bitter partisanship which emanated from the “ninth floor.” The Governor vetoed more legislation than any Governor in the history of Arizona.

Governor Janet Napolitano signed bills designed to encourage companies to expand in Arizona and to boost investment in technology start-ups.

Key bills signed by Napolitano were:
House Bill 2139 – the sales tax factor bill This bill offers companies a choice of formulas for calculating their state income taxes. This bill directly benefits high-tech companies such as Intel –which pay high wages, build expensive factories but sell little product in Arizona. This new formula benefits industry with relatively low sales within the state.

House Bill 2779 – reduction in business real and personal property taxes. The Flagstaff Chamber joined numerous other chambers statewide in support of business tax assessment ratio reduction. This bill lowers the assessment ratio on business property to 20% from 25% over 10 years. This is perceived to be a key win for businesses of all sizes.

Senate Bill 1335 – the angel investment tax credit bill. This bill creates a 30% tax credit over three years for people who invest $25,000 to $250,000 in qualified technology companies. This credit increases to 35% for investments in biotechnology or rural Arizona companies. This tax change becomes available if a company or companies invests $1 billion in Arizona. It’s hoped that this bill helps to aggressively build technology in Arizona.

The Governor was also the first Governor in many years to agree to a full accounting of the federal funds that flow through Arizona’s Executive Branch of government without being appropriated by the Legislature. Estimates range near $23 billion flowing directly to state agencies and other entities each year from the federal government. These funds are an addition to the roughly $8 billion the state spends annually.

We will continue to follow state issues closely and continue to participate in the legislative debate on behalf of business.

Presentation: “True Colors”
The "True Colors" Program is a creative and innovative exercise that examines personality types and provides a framework for understanding the behavioral dynamics between employees and managers and students and teachers. The program delineates and analyzes human characteristics, individual intrinsic values, the behavioral manifestations of personal attitudes and preferences, the manner in which different personalities handle conflict, and an appreciation of individual talents and abilities. The "True Colors" Program helps people to understand what their individual attitude has to do with the way they are imprinted with specific ways of thinking, understanding, valuing, and conceptualizing. Once that information is understood then each person will understand how their behavior reflects their motives, wants, aims, desires, and interactions with other people.

2004 ATHENA AWARD WINNER, STEPHANIE MCKINNEY ATTENDS NATIONAL ATHENA LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

In her own words Stephanie shares the inspiration and rewards of attending the conference:

What an honor and a privilege it was for me to represent Flagstaff at the 2005 National Athena Leadership Conference held the last week of April in Chicago. This gathering of 300 accomplished women leaders from 5 countries was by far the most inspirational and personally rewarding conference I have ever attended.
As I boarded the plane to head to Chicago I found myself wondering what the conference would be like, would I enjoy the company of so many women, would the sessions be interesting, etc. What I discovered at the conference was a top notch slate of speakers such as Kay Koplovitz, the founder of USA Networks and first female network president in television history, Maureen Kempston-Darkes, group vice president for Latin America/Africa/Middle East operations of the General Motors Corporation, and Jerrie Uerberle, founder and president of Global Interactions.

I was equally impressed with the breakout sessions that covered a wide variety of topics relevant to business and leadership issues that were facilitated by well-known authors and speakers. I especially enjoyed the session by Dr. Charles Stoner on how successful leaders bounce back from setbacks and move on to accomplish even more. Several of the workshops offered intuitive advice to help “over achieving” women to take more time to nurture themselves, develop a support network, manage multiple demands, learn to negotiate better, and to enjoy the journey of success.

What I enjoyed the most was the caliber of women attending the conference. Each woman I had the opportunity to interact with had their own personal story of accomplishment and was involved with bringing about positive change in their own community, state or country. There were many stories shared (usually over a glass of wine with much laughter) on how we each dealt with obstacles, negative people, and helping others to get comfortable with change in order to address compelling issues that we were each involved with.

I wish to thank the Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce for hosting the Athena program in our community, Wiseman Aviation for providing a personal “limo in the sky” ride to Sky Harbor Airport, and McCoy Motors for the generous scholarship to attend the Chicago conference. This was truly an amazing experience, one that I would recommend to any business woman.
