ARIZONA CARDINALS CANCEL FLAGSTAFF NFL TRAINING CAMP DUE TO NAU VIRUS

The Arizona Cardinals recently announced that they will not return to the NAU campus for their training camp due to a virus outbreak. More than 120 people contracted the Norovirus causing campus officials to send summer campers home and take precautions to prevent further spread of the virus. The Cardinals administration moved training camp to Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott.
Cardinals players were to arrive Sunday, July 31 with daily practices set to begin the next day through August 18th. The Cardinals have held their training camp at NAU since moving to Arizona in 1988. The Chamber commissioned an economic study in 2003 which revealed a $2million impact on the local economy. The training camp has become the major summer tourism draw for our community.
Cardinals Vice President Michael Bidwill phoned President Julie Pastrick to express his deep regrets that the camp would be moving from Flagstaff. He expressed his gratitude for the many long standing business relationships cultivated over the past years and his appreciation for the fan loyalty developed in Flagstaff. During the phone conversation, Pastrick and Bidwill discussed the unfortunate situation at hand and pledged to work closely together in upcoming training camp contract negotiations later this year.

CHAMBER DEVELOPS SMALL BUSINESS DIVISION

The Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has decided to launch a Small Business Division to focus on providing additional services to member businesses. Member businesses frequently share that they would like to attend educational seminars in the areas of human resources, finance, marketing and more.
There is also a request for a visible and consistent “Buy Locally” campaign that involves educating our community about the direct result of buying from hometown businesses. A consistent, ongoing campaign could bring a high level of visibility to local chamber members participating in “Buy Locally”. The Chamber will be an even stronger catalyst for growing our economic vitality community-wide.
If you would like to be a member of the original task force that will shape the programs and services offered by the Chamber’s Small Business Division, please give us a call.
We welcome your requests for services offered by the Chamber in the program. Member input is a very important part of successfully developing the Small Business Division for you. Contact President Julie Pastrick at 774-4505.

EDUCATION COMMITTEE FOCUSES ON CHARACTER COUNTS
The Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors approved the Education Committee to launch a pilot project. The committee is seeking 15 businesses to participate in a “Character Counts” collaboration with 15 classrooms.
Character Counts is a youth ethics initiative that involves training our future workforce in trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Nancy Branham, ReMax Realty has worked on this project from its inception. “Research indicates that employees with these characteristics are valuable to prospective employers. We hope to create a long standing partnership between member businesses and local schools in the area of workforce development”, stated Branham.
APS is sponsoring a “Character Counts” training session for each participating business. The Education Committee will facilitate the partnerships between the schools and business. If you would like your business to be considered in the launch of this initiative please contact Linda Lance, Chairman of the Board at llance@horizonmoves.com or 774-1436.
