13. What is your opinion of local government competing with local, state or national businesses for services in our community?
Mayor Joseph Donaldson
I'm not sure of the intent of this question. If you are referring to having attorneys in house, or the community's own sanitation department, or the community's own fire department and police department, or the community's own community development department, or the community's own economic development department, or the community's own housing department including the Flagstaff Housing Authority, or the community's own senior services center, or the community's own aquaplex and recreation departments, and so on, then I support these community services.
Sara Presler-Hoefle
Local Government should not compete at the expense of local, state, or national businesses.
Karla Brewster
What services do you have in mind? I don’t have an answer as I can’t think of what competition you might have in mind. Generally, I would say that different agencies should cooperate in a venture and not duplicate efforts. Just because businesses are private enterprises doesn’t necessarily make them more efficient.
Coral Evans
Local government should not be in competition with private business (local, state or national) for services in our community.
Morgan Hagaman
Flagstaff needs to compete with whomever to be able to bring the best possible services it can to this community. It nice to see some of the new businesses and services that have come to town. Growing up in Flagstaff, I remember having to drive to Phoenix for many goods and services. It is nice to have those services here now and not have to go to Phoenix. Any services that can keep our residents in Flagstaff should be welcomed.
John McCulloch
I can’t think of any examples where a government can compete more efficiently than the private sector.
Micole Shorty
All governments (no matter at what level) should cooperate to provide the best service to the public we must cooperate and not compete.
Al White
I’m not wild about it in philosophy- since our municipal corporation has its niche in the economy of services. What is somewhat unfair is that our “corporation” is supposed to provide services at a reduced cost- with 50 to 70% cost recovery and no profit margin. Lets see businesses do that. I think our roles are pretty clear and noncompetitive. |
