July 31, 2010Musical Tribute To Jerry Garcia
Orpheum Theater. Commemorating the life and times of Grateful Dead lead guitarist and cultural icon, Jerry Garcia. Event organizer Tony Abrams has assembled some of Northern Arizona’s finest local musicians in a six band, one DJ evening. The musicians, all of whom share a passion for the music and cultural legacy Garcia left behind, will interpret his music which spanned the musical spectrum from 1960’s psychedelia to bluegrass revival. Slated to play first will be classical guitarist Craig Yarbrough followed by the guitar and bass duet of Mandy Ferrarini and Matt Germansen. Flagstaff favorites, The Voluntary String Band will play an acoustic set followed by an electric set performed by Fargus. Another acoustic set by Knuckle Sandwich will precede the night’s finale, a group nicknamed “The Jerry All-Stars” assembled for the occasion. The all-ages event coincides with Garcia’s birthday. Garcia, who would have turned 68 on August 1st, passed away 15 years ago. Despite his untimely death, organizers hope the event will highlight the profound impact Garcia still continues to have on today’s live music scene.
