About Flagstaff

Train station in downtown Flagstaff, ArizonaWelcome to Flagstaff, Arizona!

Nestled at the base of the San Francisco Peaks, Flagstaff has the feel of a small town with the diversity and opportunities of a big city. It is home to both an historic district that treasures its past, and cutting-edge research facilities that embrace the future.

Upon arriving here, you’ll notice the fresh mountain air and rich smell of the Coconino National Forest, the world’s largest Ponderosa Pine forest, which surrounds the community. At night, thousands of stars are visible in our clear skies. We enjoy four seasons in Flagstaff – the beautiful explosion of flowers that marks the spring; a temperate summer with occasional afternoon monsoon rainstorms; the colorful foliage of fall; and snow in the winter. Of course, these weather conditions are perfect for a variety of outdoor activities – skiing, hiking, camping, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, mountain climbing, biking, and much more.

Flagstaff is proud of its small-town friendliness that is shown to citizens and visitors alike. It is the hub of many of the state’s attractions, with easy access to two interstates and other major roads that lead to Arizona’s numerous natural wonders. Take 180 to the northwest and you reach the Grand Canyon. Eastbound Interstate 40 leads to the Painted Desert and ultimately New Mexico. Go west on it and you will reach California. State Highway 89 north takes you to Page and 89A south winds through the dramatic mountain views of Oak Creek Canyon down to the red rock mesas of Sedona. Phoenix is a little over 2 hours away on Interstate 17. Running directly through historic Flagstaff is the fabled Route 66, adding to Flagstaff’s character and charm.

With one of the state’s three universities calling Flagstaff home, education is a major part of the community. Northern Arizona University and Coconino Community College not only provides an educational core, but offer venues for lectures, film festivals, and performing and fine arts. The Museum of Northern Arizona, the Pioneer Museum, Lowell Observatory, Riordan Mansion, and the Arboretum provide the city with numerous other educational and artistic venues. The Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra, Flagstaff Light Opera Company, Master Chorale of Flagstaff, Theatrikos theater group and other community-based artistic groups have regular seasons throughout the year.

For residents, Flagstaff’s diversity coupled with its size and location make it an ideal place to live.
